Red damask valance embroidered with pairs of auspicious birds in a landscape setting. Butterflies flit among the blooming peonies, narcissus, and chrysanthemums. All of these trees, flowers, paired birds and animals embroidered on a red ground convey wishes of marital happiness.

The valance is trimmed in a ribbon of embroidered pastel flowers and then bordered in golden yellow silk couched with gold-wrapped threads that frame small images of birds and butterflies. A strip of pale red silk runs along the top border where the valance would have hung from a bed canopy.

This panel predominantly uses variations of the satin stitch, but also incorporates outline and stem stitches, seed knots, and couching. The wide range of embroidery stitches used on this piece and the naturalistic depictions of the birds and landscape are a good example of the exquisite needlework of Canton in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Our gauze curtains are delicate, sheer, and drape beautifully. They provide privacy and let light in at the same time. You can hang them as regular curtains over windows or use them to make bed or ceiling canopies. For window coverings with an attractive draped effect, you will need two inches of gauze curtain width for every inch of window width. For a typical bed canopy, use 8 gauze curtains, either all the same color or a combination of similar tones to provide a soft variegated look. You can also just wind one or two gauze curtain sheers loosely around a curtain rod, letting them drape along the bar and at the ends, to add color and interest to your room, without covering the window or blocking any light. Gauze curtains provide exactly the right airy feeling required for decorating in hot climates or summer retreats.
